An Image of the Public toward Public Health Nurses

Abstract
In order to asses the public attitudes and knowledge on public health nursing in the community, a survey was conducted in Seoul from 28 july-30 September 1971.
For this propose stratified sample of 1,477 persons from professional and non-porfessional people were questioned. Followings are the conclusions of the survey results;
1) Of the total number of respondents;-
34.5% were professionals and 65.5% were non-professionals.
44.3% were in their 20 years.
31.6% were college graduates.
2) Of the total number of Respondents;-
80.7% were aware of the public health nurses activities.
19.3% were unaware of the public health nurses activities.
3) Of the respondents selected from health center uses;-
50% had consulted a public health nurse on health matters.
35.9% considered public health nurse reliable.
26.4% considered public health nurse fairly reliable.
3.7% considered public health nurse unreliable.
34.1% gave no answer.
Of those who had never consulted a public health nurse;-
58.4% said they had no opportunity.
8.6% denied need of consult.
17.3% were indifferent.
16.5% were unaware of activity of public health nurse.
4) Of the total number of respondents;-
34.7% considered public health nurses should have more preparation.
17.8% considered public health nurses should have advanced education.
5) Impressions about public health nurses, depended on educational background of respondents.
46.0% said that public health nurses were kind while 11.2% said that they were not.
6) 97.2% of the respondents said that public health nurses must wear nuiform during their duty.
7) 53.4% said that the educational standards of general nurses should not be lower than junior college graduates, 44.2% asserted that the educational standards of public health nurses should be at least junior college graduates with additional education of profession for public health nursing, and 26.3% said that they should be regular college graduates with additional professional education for public health nursing.
8) 87.5% of respondents asserted that the activities of public health nurses were essential for improvement of public health. This opinion was advocated by 90.1% of health center uses.
9) 55.9% of health center uses said that the acitvities of public health nurses were adequate, and 57.3% of professional occupations said that activities were inadequate. 33.6% of the respondents said that the family planning activities occupied most of public health nursing time.
The results of opinion polls thus coincided with the Government¢¥s concentrated efforts on the family planning program.
Small porportions of respondents cited home visiting and health education.
10) To the question, "Who should improve the activities of public health nurses in this conutry?" 68.7% pointed out the administration, 19.4% the public health nurses, and 9.9% the people. In view of the above results, it is believed that public health nurses should make their recipients know about their activites.
They should also try to improve their kindness, behavior, and knowledge so that their clents are to consult them regarding their health problems.
It is also believed that public health nurses must correctly understand what the main stream of their activities is, so as to avoid a setback in the operation of their fuctions. Changes in the administrative organization could secure butter utilization of public health nurses. They should be treated better and their morale should be boosted They should be given greater opportunities to exercise their leadership and to participate in planning and research activites.
Also an daequate amount of budget should be allocated.
